When does menopause begin?

Menopause begins when you go 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. At that point, estrogen production has dropped to such low levels that you stop ovulating and your periods end.

On average, women reach menopause around the age of 52. However, you can transition into menopause any time between the ages of 40 and 58.

Why do I need gynecological care after menopause?

After menopause, you still need regular gynecology services for many reasons. The OB/GYN team at Symphony Medical ensures you get the recommended screenings for osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and breast and endometrial cancer.

Up until the age of 65, you should get Pap smears to screen for cervical cancer. Postmenopausal women also need regular well-woman exams to prevent gynecologic and chronic health conditions.

Most importantly, the loss of estrogen puts you at risk for a new group of symptoms and health concerns.

What health concerns require postmenopausal care?

Up to 80% of women struggle with hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings. These common menopause symptoms typically last seven years for most women, but they’re treatable.

Estrogen regulates many areas of your body. When its levels decline, you have a higher chance of developing problems such as:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Loss of your sex drive
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Pelvic floor prolapse
  • Hair loss
  • Dry skin
  • Insomnia
  • Weight gain
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Loss of bone mass (osteoporosis)

While hot flashes and night sweats eventually go away, the problems in this list only improve with treatment.

How are menopause symptoms treated?

The team at Symphony Medical evaluates your symptoms, completes a pelvic and breast exam, and then runs diagnostic tests if needed. They develop your treatment based on your unique health care needs.

You may need dietary and exercise recommendations to prevent disease and support wellness. When dealing with symptoms like hot flashes, they can recommend lifestyle tips for mild symptoms or prescribe hormone replacement therapy for moderate to severe symptoms.

Restoring normal estrogen levels eases all of your postmenopausal symptoms, including vaginal dryness. Healthy hormones also prevent chronic health conditions like osteoporosis.

Beyond hormone replacement therapy, your provider has many possible treatments for postmenopausal conditions like urinary incontinence and weak pelvic floor muscles.

If you have postmenopausal symptoms, questions about your health, or you need to schedule a well-woman checkup, call Symphony Medical or book an appointment online today.
